Customer reviews for: The Colosseum dungeons and upper levels

Buy tickets here

These reviews relate to the various tours of the Colosseum Dungeons that we offer, and have offered in the past. Until the Belvedere top levels were opened in 2017, the dungeon tours were actually provided as a combo tour of both the dungeons and upper levels, hence the references in some reviews to upper levels!

Im just disappointed that the lines for reserved tickets and the ordinary lines were almost as long. It seems that everybody is reserving their tickets and queues are getting longer and longer. Overall the tour is okay.

I would have liked to have seen more of the lower level of the Colosseum. It was almost as if we were looking at it at a distance. I would have liked to have walked among its stone foundation pillars and seen up close some of the mechanisms used below the deck to make its systems function.

Tour guide herself (name escapes me) was wonderful and gave a good insight to the Colosseum itself and the surrounding area. Disappointing thing about this was the "hype" behind doing a night tour and what you got to see. Yes, the amphitheater was closed off to the general public and gave a very intimate setting, but it was nothing more on the tour at night than the same tour offered by the Colosseum during the day (minus the fact during the day you get to see the 3rd tier which is a totally different perspective). Being in the Colosseum at night did have it's advantages and getting to be on the ground floor of the arena as well as the subfloor was very inspiring. Just wish they'd open more of the dungeon up and let you see more of the hidden gems. Hopefully in a couple of years that will become a reality.
[Tickitaly responds: of course everyone has their own preferences concerning day or night visits at Colosseum! We just remind that during the dungeons' tours you visit all the area opened to the public... the Colosseum was built almost 2,000 years ago and obviously restoration and maintenance operations are still ongoing!]

The tour started at 9.50 instead of 9.30 and as we were there at 9.15 meant we were standing around for over 30mins before the tour commenced, then we had to wait for the group to use the toilet - so it was 10am before we commenced the tour - I had trouble understanding the tour guide at times with her strong accent. I loved getting into the lower levels and the upper levels.

I had been to the Colosseum in 2011, but did not know about the "upper and lower level" tour option. So, I was very interested in returning to walk through the lower level. The upper level tour was great with interesting views. The lower level was a bit less interesting...as we had to stop at the ropes and only got to "look" out at the lower sections! It would have been much better if we had more freedom to actually walk through the lower level. Still interesting, and the guide was very good!

Although this young lady was knowledgeable, she needs more instruction. First, unlike our Vatican tour, we had no aural aids to clearly hear the tour guide. Consequently, to listen, everyone had to uncomfortably herd together like a flock of sheep. Secondly, she didn't wait for all the tourists to assemble before she began lecturing.

Lower levels- not interesting, nothing to see, it was only possible to go under the platform - not much to see there. Upper levels - at least the view was good but you have to have great weather (during rainy days you are almost on top of the building)

The tour began very far away from the Colosseum, there was a lot of walking prior to even getting to the main attraction. We really just wanted that tour of the Colosseum at night. When we finally got to the Colosseum, the tour guide was pretty dull. We ended up leaving early.

The contact point was easy to find and very visible in a tremendous amount of people vying to see this incredible site! However, the guide who did speak English, was extremely hard to understand and made the experience very disappointing!

My wife and I loved the tour, but the organization at the Colosseum is HORRIBLE! This was not tickitaly's fault. The staff at the Colosseum are VERY unhelpful- we almost missed our tour as they kept directing us to the wrong places! We arrived an hour early, and we still almost missed it!

Although the Colosseum was amazing, we could barely understand our "English-speaking" tour guide. We were not able to learn anything from the tour as we couldn't tell what she was saying. We were glad to be able to see the lower and upper levels but very disappointed with the guide.
[Tickitaly responds:We are sorry about the language trouble you had, we have our 3 hour tour of the Colosseum Dungeon that is arranged by us directly with our private guides, in that case we can guarantee for the language but on the 70minutes tour, which is not arranged by us with our private guides we cannot interfere with the Colosseum choices. We will definitely forward your message to the staff and we hope we will all be able to improve the service.]

We loved that we could get to the upper and lower levels. I am sure that the tour was interesting but our guides English was only so so...that would have been able to have been somewhat overlooked but the head sets you guys gave out are AWFUL!!! We were on a tour with When In Rome at the vatican and the speaker/ headphones that were given out we're amazing. You guys fell short... :(

The tour would have been fantastic except the guide's English was heavily accented and difficult to understand. We had our children with us who had been reading up on it but they could not understand his at all and we found it hard. It was disappointing. It was good to see the extra places and the guy knew his stuff but hard to understand.

Wonderful experience. Alfredo was great, he knew all the history. The lass who took over from him at the coloseum was as good and knew her history. All round great people to deal with and a highly recommended experience without the huge crowds.

ask the organization for better informed staff and clear information panels, especially when there is a mass of people.

Tickitaly guide was very knowledgeable and timed the walk perfectly. The colosseum at night avoided the crowds and heat, very enjoyable. She gave advice on how to get home safely.

Where do these reviews come from?
About two weeks after you have used your tickets we send an email asking you for your feedback on tickitaly.com and on the individual attractions that you visited. We ask our customers to give us and our tickets a rating out of five stars and to write a short review - all of these reviews come from people that have bought tickets from us.
Why are there more stars awarded than reviews?
Many of our customers opt to award stars rather than write a review.
Why do some reviews have a ? instead of stars?
Some reviewers opt to write a comment but don't enter a star entry. These are sometimes positive and sometimes negative - we include these reviews in the listings after the starred reviews, but we don't include them in the overall ratings.
Where is my review? I can't see anything in the list?
Each review is checked by our staff in order to avoid posting inappropriate content or personal details, and to see if the customer has had a specific problem that needs to be addressed. In most cases these reviews go online with their star rating and any comment that has been made. In the cases that there is an issue that we have to address, such as refunds or specific complaints, we flag the review for response. In those few cases, any star rating is immediately taken into account in our ratings but the actual review is only posted once we have resolved the issue or had an opportunity to respond. Any editorial comment will be clearly highlighted like this: [Tickitaly responds: .....].
Are these reviews real or have you faked them?
All of the reviews and star ratings have come from people that have purchased tickets from us. We are very proud of the service and products that we provide, but obviously we aren't perfect and sometimes things go wrong. Once we have addressed any problems that a customer has had, we will process the original review (although we reserve the right to fix minor typos like ticketitaly).
If a review contains offensive language, abuse or personal insults, we'll publish the stars but omit the text.
