The Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and together with the towering volcano of Vesuvius are one of the most popular destinations in Italy. They offer an unparalleled view of day-to-day life in ancient Rome, as well as a sobering insight into the power of nature.
Both cities were buried by Vesuvius in an eruption in 79 AD and were gradually lost in time - with rediscovery and excavations only really starting in the mid-eighteenth century. Protected by volcanic ash, and hidden from looters and treasure seekers, these are some of the worlds' most fascinating archaeological sites.
