This three hour walking tour of Florence in the company of a local English speaking guide takes in the most important attractions and includes skip-the-line tickets to the Accademia. In a group of not more than 16 people you will discover the best known sights and best kept secrets of Tuscany’s capital with a visit to the Accademia Gallery, the Duomo (the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore), Piazza della Signoria and of course the famous Ponte Vecchio.
From your meeting place in Piazza San Marco you will walk to the Gallerie dell’Accademia di Firenze. Home to one of the most famous statues in the world, Michelangelo’s David, the Accademia Gallery is the second most visited gallery in Florence. Where normally you would have to wait in a long queue for entry, your skip-the-line ticket means that you will only have to go through a short security line to get in to see this huge marble masterpiece. Security takes a little longer in the busiest months (June and July) but our team works to keep delays to a minimum.
You will visit the towering Duomo from the outside and hear from your knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide about this stunning piece of architecture, Brunelleschi’s incredible dome and the famed bronze doors of the Baptistry.
A tour of Florence wouldn’t be complete without a stop for gelato. You will get a chance to buy a delicious treat at one of the best gelaterie in Florence before continuing to Piazza della Signoria.
An outdoor gallery of art, this square is filled with beautiful architecture, statues (including a copy of Michelangelo’s David) and fountains. The historical and political heart of the city, it is home to the town hall, Palazzo Vecchio, the graceful Loggia dei Lanzi and the gateway to the Uffizi Galleries with its shaded exterior corridors. As you walk you will learn some of the turbulent history of this fascinating city, and experience the lasting legacy of the Medici family, of Dante, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.
Fans of Dante and his Divine Comedy will enjoy seeing the exterior of the house where he grew up (now a museum) and the little church of Santa Margherita where it is said he and Beatrice fell in love.
Continuing to the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) admire the views and the jewellery shops that now line it. Originally home to fishmongers and tanners, the bridge created such a stench in the area that in 1593 Ferdinand I de’ Medici proclaimed that from then on only jewellers should be permitted to trade there.
After your visit to the Ponte Vecchio you return to Piazza San Marco and take your leave of your group and your guide who will be more than happy to suggest good places to eat and drink.
