Announced yesterday was a three-year restoration plan for the Giotto Frescoes on the stories of St Francis in Florence’s Santa Croce Church.
The works, in the Bardi Chapel, date from around 1325 and are in a relatively parlous state. The work, estimated to cost around one million Euro, will be carried out by Florence’s famed Opificio delle pietre dure workshop, recently engaged in a similar restoration on Giotto’s works in the cappelle Bardi e Peruzzi.
These works revealed problems in both the underlying plaster – intonaco – as well as the painted surface, and such knowledge will doubtlessly prove very useful in the initial diagnostic phase.
