Announced in the past week is news of another fantastic discovery made during the ongoing restoration work at Rome’s Domus Aurea, the so-called ‘Golden House’ of the Roman Emperor Nero.
Unseen for 2000 years, the room has been baptised ‘Room of the Sphynx’ and, although it is still largely un-excavated, there are already some incredible images to be seen, frescoes of fantastic sea-monsters, Pan and his minions, and centaurs, all in styles seen elsewhere in similar discoveries.
The discovery was made at the tail-end of 2018, and, while restoration work is ongoing, the room is not yet visible to visitors, but it is another page in the unfolding story of a truly incredible place.
