Uffizi Galleries and Pitti Palace, Florence
6th June 2019 – 29th September 2019
To celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Cosimo I de’Medici, first Grand Duke of Tuscany, Florence will see Omaggio a Cosimo I, three mini exhibitions to be held in the Uffizi Galleries and the Pitti Palace.
The historical Medicean Guard, the Lanzi, are celebrated in an exhibition in the Uffizi Galleries. This exhibition is a collection of paintings, drawings, engravings, arms and armour which traces the social, cultural and military history of the Lanzi and their impact on 16th to 18th century life in Florence.
Entry to I Cento Lanzi del Principe is included in the Uffizi entrance ticket.
Acquired in 1550 by Cosimo’s consort, Eleonora di Toledo, Palazzo Pitti became the Grand Duke’s residence, and the impressive gardens there imitated by the ruling classes across Europe. Il Villano e la sua Botticella. Divertimenti nel nuovo giardino shows the restoration of what was probably the first sculpture made for the Boboli Gardens.
Palazzo Pitti, Sala delle Nicchie. Tickets for Pitti Palace available here.
Also at the Pitti Palace, there is Una biografia tessuta. Gli arazzi in onore di Cosimo I, an exhibition of eight tapestries illustrating highlights from the period of the Grand Duke’s government. This ‘woven biography’ was produced under tapestry manufacturer Pietro Févère, and will be shown in the Sala Bianca and Sala delle Nicchie.
Entry to this exhibition included in Pitti Palace entrance ticket.
