The golden ‘Carro’ of the exhibition title is a float, a carnival float, and the exhibition has the sub-title ‘The Ephemeral Beauty of Baroque Carnivals’; the centre of the exhibition is the painting ‘Il Carro d’oro’ by Johan Paul Schor, acquired by the Uffizi Gallery for the planned ‘Museo delle Carrozze’ at Palazzo Pitti.
Schor was a collaborator with Bernini, and the painting immortalises the extravagant masked carnival of Prince Giovanno Battista Borghese for the Roman Carnival of 1664.
