Duomo di Siena
22nd – 28th October 2018
The splendid marble-graffito floors of Siena Cathedral are ordinarily only able to be admired by visitors from the running of the famous Palio horse-race until the end of October. The marbles were described by Vasari as ‘the most beautiful, largest and most magnificent, that was ever made’.
This inlaid marble floor is a ‘magic carpet’ that is covered for most of the year – to protect it – comprising 56 panels from many a noted artist such as Sassetta, Domenico di Bartolo, Matteo di Giovanni, Domenico Beccafumi and Pinturicchio (the Hill of Wisdom).
This year, for the final week of display, it will be possible, through the special ‘Gate of Heaven’ ticket (not the standard Duomo ticket, note), to look down and across these treasures after dark, from 6.30 to 10.00 PM (groups every half hour), with amazingly revealing light shows adding an incredible air to this already-speciaal visit.
