This new video shows some of the painstaking restoration work taking place in the so-called ‘Domus Vintage’, a residence of a wealthy and refined citizen of Pompeii in the first century BC. On show are stucco panels that mimic coloured marble strips, as well as marble panels from imported ‘eastern’ marble. There are writings in some of the frescoes, and everything is in an incredible state of repair.
The large holes you see in the walls are the result of rather more clumsy excavation works dating to the 18th century, when the workers smashed through walls from adjoining digs rather than digging down and uncovering the rooms intact.
