Florence Duomo – Cathedral
‘Gnomone’ phenomenon, June 2018
A quite unique annual event will again be visible to the public in 2018 when the position of the sun causes a projection onto a specially designed location of the cathedral’s marble floor.
Thought to have been created in 1475, the sun’s rays enter the cupola – dome – at such an angle as to cause an illumination in the ‘Cappella dell Croce’, the chapel to the left of the main altar, for just a few minutes either side of noon, and only during June and July.
The event can be seen by the public on the 7th, 12th, 19th and 21 st of June, with an explanation in english on the 19th.
