‘Il Palatino e il suo giardino segreto.
Nel fascino degli Horti Farnesiani.’
Rome, Palatine Hill Area, 21st March – 28th October 2018.
A chance to enjoy a bit of Roman history away from the throngs at the Forum and Colosseum, this exhibition (covered by your Colosseum tickets) traces a route that was laid out when the gardens – Horti – were commissioned by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese in the 16th century, ranging from Via Nova, to the Forum and up to the aviaries on the Palatine Hill.
Essentially the exhibition celebrates the completion of restoration work on the aviaries, but it has a grand scope, telling the whole story of the Horti, from Renaissance landscaping to more modern times and the European ‘Grand Tour’, when their romantic allure enchanted the likes of Goethe, right up to modern days and excavations to uncover secrets of ancient Rome.
There is authentic replanting, impressive sculpture, and extensive use of modern, immersive technology to recreate the gardens as they would have been in their hey-day. Again, entrance to the exhibition is covered by your Colosseum ticket or Colosseum guided tour ticket.
