Exhibition: ‘Omaggio al Granduca: I piatti d’argento per la Festa di San Giovanni’
Pitti Palace, Tesoro dei Granduchi, until 5th November 2017
Featuring a series of fine silver plates from the Medici collections, plates inscribed and decorated with scenes and stories of the Medici dynasty based on designs by significant Roman artists.
Th exhibition tells of how the plates came to be donated to the Medici family, tales of political favours to Cardinals, of politics, diplomacy and influence during the 1600 and 1700’s.
The remarkable collection of places would likely have been lost to history with the decline of the Medici were it not for the work of the house of Ginori di Doccia who produced a series of plaster casts of the original plates with a view to producing porcelain reproductions. Some of these are on show, as are more recent works in porcelain and silver, all based on the original designs.
