‘Warhol’
Fondazione Roma Museo, Palazzo Cipolla, Rome
18th April – 28th September 2014
Following its huge success in Milan, this fantastic Andy Warhol exhibition has moved to Rome, on display in the halls of the Museo della Fondazione Roma in Palazzo Cipolla.
The Brant Foundation, founded by Peter Brant, curator of the exhibition, important art collector and close friend of Warhol’s, has provided 150 pieces by the American artist, creating a journey through his professional life by featuring works from every one of his artistic phases.
This journey begins in the 1950s, a time when Warhol made his commercial art debut and was quickly hired by such prestigious publications as Harper’s Bazaar and the New Yorker, as well as creating art for advertisements. Among his creations from this time which are on show here are his famous gold leaf slippers, and some examples of his “blotted line” technique.
The next room contains many famous pieces from the 1960s, as well as several drawings; among these, some of his early pieces on Campbell’s Soup, Coke, stamps, One Dollar Bills, and two wonderful Marilyns, including one of the 4 “Shot Marilyn”s.
Other well-know pieces on show are Brillo Box, some early Flowers from 1964, Mao from 1972, the Ladies and Gentleman series on New York’s drag queens, and several Skulls. Oxydation is also featured, as is a Camouflage from 1986, and a whole room is dedicated to his polaroids from the 1960s.
This exhibition pays a wonderful tribute to Andy Warhol, an artist who perfectly interpreted society and consumerism, making icons out of such varied subjects as Coca Cola, Elvis Presley, Campbell’s Soup, Liz Taylor and Marilyn Monroe, and correctly predicting the rising power of mass media.
Don’t miss this unique chance to see some of Warhol’s most famous work!
