‘La Città Ideale. L’utopia del Rinascimento a Urbino tra Piero della Francesca e Raffaello’
Galleria Nazionale delle Marche – Palazzo Ducale, Urbino, Le Marche, Italy
April 6th – July 8th 2012
The well known painting of the ‘Ideal city’ is the starting point for this exhibition. The painting, famously unattributed, is held to be the height of Renaissance civilisation, a civilisation that perhaps achieved its high point in this area under the rule of the Duke of Urbino, Federico da Montefeltro, in the second half of the fifteenth century.
Surrounding this painted panel are more than 80 works – painting, sculptures, wooden panels, illustrated manuscripts – by the likes of Veneziano, Piero della Francesca, Fra Carnevale, Leon Battista Alberti, Francesco di Giorgio, Luca Signorelli, Jacopo de Barbari, Mantegna, Perugino, Bramante and Raphael, all testimony to this highpoint of an incredible artistic epoch.
