As we explained in this post we are now taking bookings for tickets and tours of the Colosseum in Rome until the end of August 2012. We still have not been told when the dungeons will be reopening, but it surely cannot be long now.
In other news, work is finally due to begin (in March) on the long awaited Colosseum repairs. The start date has been moved a few times (see this post announcing that work would begin in September 2011, and see here for some background on this unusual privately-sponsored initiative), but it really does seem that all hurdles have been removed now. **** Update, one day later … As you were … work is now on hold again – see this post.
The Colosseum will remain open to visitors at all times, but recent news may see some restrictions being placed on visitor numbers. The Uffizi Gallery in Florence has implemented a similar scheme in the past – looking to ensure that the gallery is never over-filled – but it has only been used a couple of times.
