Pompeii is still a hot potato [sic]. The new Italian Culture Minister, Giancarlo Galan, steps up to the plate and makes Pompeii the site of the first official visit of his tenure. His predecessor was called upon to resign after last year’s collapse(s) at the Unesco heritage site, only to fall on his sword a few months later, ostensibly in protest at the lack of funding for the arts in Italy.
Galan (see interview, Italian only – pdf link) now makes clear that he places Pompeii at the top of his list and talks plainly about the availability of European (EU) funding for preventative and curative works.
