Rome, Complesso del Vittoriano
Via di S. Pietro In Carcere (Piazza Venezia)
Monday to Thursday 09.30 AM – 19.30 PM
Saturday 9.30 AM – 23.30 PM, Sunday 9.30 AM – 20.30 PM.
Opening in a couple of days, a major exhibition of work by Vincent Van Gogh (and some pieces that inspired him) – Campagna senza tempo – Città moderna – a literal and rather clumsy translation of which would be ‘timeless countryside and modern city’. The exhibition is quite clear in its aim of equalling, if not outdoing, the recent hugely successful Caravaggio exhibition.
The exhibition sees the first showing in Rome for more than 20 years of more than a hundred paintings and drawings gathered from museums all over the world; curated by one Van Gogh’s leading biographers, Cornelia Homburg, the works highlight the duality of Van Gogh’s love of the immutable and calm countryside alongside his love of the bright lights and fast tempo of the city. Also on show are works from those that inspired the artist, including Millet, Pissarro, Cézanne, Gauguin and Seurat.
We’re not, unfortunately, selling tickets for this exhibition, but given that it is off season there is likely to be less of a clamour for availability, as there was with the Caravaggio show.
